When the laser stops, the clock starts

Excimer lasers fail in predictable ways — and in ways only experience recognizes. I troubleshoot at the component level: not "replace the module and pray," but finding the actual fault in the optical train, gas system, high-voltage supply, or control electronics.

  • Energy output low or falling — optics degradation, gas depletion, or HV issues, diagnosed with calibrated instruments.
  • Error codes & lockouts — decoded and resolved, not just cleared.
  • No-fire / intermittent fire — trigger circuits, thyratron/switch faults, interlock chains.
  • Handpiece & delivery problems — fiber, window, and spot-size issues that quietly wreck dosimetry.
  • Dead systems — power supplies, boards, and everything between the wall plug and the beam.
Safety note: excimer lasers contain lethal voltages and pressurized halogen gas mixes. Never open the cabinet — describe the symptom and let me take the risk.

Preventive maintenance

The cheapest repair is the one that never happens

Excimer systems drift. Optics haze, gas mixes deplete, energy meters wander. A scheduled maintenance visit keeps your delivered dose honest and your downtime at zero.

What a PM visit includes

  • Energy output verification with calibrated external meter
  • Beam profile and spot uniformity check
  • Optical train inspection and cleaning
  • Gas system check / exchange as needed
  • Interlock and safety system test
  • Cooling system and filter service
  • Written report for your compliance binder

Recommended cadence

For a laser treating daily: a full PM every 6 months, with a quick energy verification monthly (I'll show your staff how). Lighter use: annual PM at minimum.

Practices on a maintenance plan get priority scheduling when something does break — you go to the front of the line.

With the original manufacturer out of the picture, parts are the hard problem. I maintain sourcing channels and a tested inventory for the components that actually fail.
